Puppet | Mask Design
Puppet Design Approach
Sean has been a puppeteer since he was just three after convincing his parents to buy him his first puppet at a swap meet. Sean has been designing and building for over twenty years and have had the pleasure of collaborating with many organizations and artistic teams over the years including Rogue Artists Ensemble. He specializes in large scale puppet and mask design and fabrication for theater, opera and film with an aesthetic that oscillates between the off-kilter to the whimsical.
His creations are often inspired by Bunraku puppetry traditions from Japan as well as mashups of multiple forms of puppetry including rod, black light and hand puppets. Puppets and masks are powerful and often underutilized storytelling tools and his experience as a director and designer will ensure a successful production.
Sean's design work has been seen on stages large and small including South Coast Repertory, The Getty Villa, A Noise Within, Cornerstone Theater Company, Rogue Artists Ensemble, Chicago Opera Theater and the Long Beach Opera.
Building and fabrication
With over ten years experience in fabrication including sculpting, casting / molding, jointing, mechanics and rigging of puppets and masks both large and small, any creation is possible. Sean's workshop in Los Angeles has all the tools necessary to realize even the most complex of creations.
Sean also has experience in teaching all-ages including multi-month residencies at colleges focused on manipulation and building techniques as well as devising and directing theater.
