Direction

Sean Cawelti's work explores the intersection between modern technology and folk traditions including puppetry and mask work.  As founding Artistic Director of Los Angeles' maverick Hyper-theater makers Rogue Artists Ensemble, he has been creating devised ensemble-based work for over fifteen years.

Not limited to a stage, Sean has directed awards programs, arena tours, large scale happenings and immersive galas. A member of United Scenic Artists, Sean often designs videopuppets, masks and scenery for the productions he directs, harmoniously integrating visual storytelling, physical and object-based performance. 

Sean has won awards for his work as a director, playwright and designer, including the prestigious Sherwood Award from the Center Theater Group. He was selected for the 2017 SDC Observership Class and was recently featured in American Theater Magazine as one of the top 5 artists to watch.

Past directing projects have include an adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's The Comical Tragedy or Tragical Comedy of Mr. Punch, the best-selling book Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth, and stories by Poe, Dickens and Gogol.

Recent work includes the Ovation Award winning Wood Boy Dog Fish; an original adaptation of the Pinocchio story, for adults and the site specific immersive Ovation Recommended piece KAIDAN PROJECT: Walls Grow Thin.
